IABP Conference in Edinburgh

The conference asked the IABP to undertake research for its members on the
issue of lobbying as it was felt that this could be particularly useful to all the
schemes, which are arguably an alternative to lobbying.

There was a recognition
that this would help to highlight the very distinct approach of the IABP schemes.
The initial results of the research will be presented at the December conference.
Even within the relatively small IABP European network, there is significant
variation over the public perception about the very term ‘lobbying’. The
research will also cover the whole question of appropriate and inappropriate
influence and the more subtle lobbying that takes place.

It was agreed that the next conference will focus on the research on lobbying
and the media. It has been suggested that for the first time outside practitioners
and experts on these issues be invited to contribute. The Northern Ireland
Assembly and Business Trust has generously invited the Association to hold next
year’s June conference in the Parliament building in Belfast.

Meanwhile details
of the December conference have been circulated to assist colleagues to get the
best deals on accommodation and flights. For any information please contact
